Frequently, the mainstream media in the United States and other developed countries trumpet the release of a new study or an opinion essay on workforce issues. Fears of job-killing automation, speculation about the growth of temporary and contingent employment, and concerns about worker shortages in scientific and technical fields form a constant backdrop to the usual worries of students as they wrap up their degrees and look to an uncertain future.

The importance of integrating renewable energy, such as solar PV, in the global energy mix for mitigating carbon
emissions is increasing. Despite the global drive towards renewable energy, the limited uptake of solar PV
particularly in developing nations, such as Indonesia, poses significant challenges for transition to sustainable
energy. This study analyses public discourse to comprehend the obstacles for widespread adoption of solar PV
technologies. This study employs topic modelling and sentiment analysis of mainstream and social media data to
comprehensively capture public discourse and perceptions concerning PV and residential PV adoption in
Indonesia. The findings reveal shared thematic areas in both mainstream and social media. Nonetheless, the two
media types diverge significantly in their focal points. Our findings support previous survey-based research while
introducing three new topics found in both media channels. These topics are: (1) knowledge, misconceptions,
and skepticism, (2) economically viable alternative PV technologies; and (3) government regulations and policies.
Social and visual impressions such as aesthetics, hedonic motivation, and social influence are notably
absent. Public perception varies, with mainstream media portraying PV technology more positively than social
media. From both media, the public generally holds favorable views of PV, particularly in terms of its practicality,
installation, safety, and information accessibility. Nevertheless, negative perceptions arise regarding investment
costs, regulations, governmental policies, and the adequacy of government support.

Citizen journalism convention has become a worldwide trend practiced voluntarily by the consumers of online media. It has opened a platform for citizens to disseminate news, free comments about the latest issues and demonstrate their expressions to criticize individuals or parties thatthey do not favour on the Internet. Citizen journalism has become a powerful weapon for individuals, organisations, political actors or parties to attract voters and potential voters. In fact, this occurrence has given full authority to the writer to write, share and toss opinions towardstargeted individuals or groups. It is generally perceived as bad practice because the news or content is apparently lacking in credibility and does not meet the criteria of good journalism. However, although recent issues of citizen journalism have created confusion and chaos between ethnicgroups and the government, its advantage and firmness is in creating a balance of news distribution. This paper aims to discuss the practice of citizen journalism in Malaysia and highlight its impact in the country’s socio-political climate. In-depth interviews with nine respondentswere conducted to analyse the research objectives. Findings show that citizen journalism has changed the landscape of socio-political environment with unfiltered or unreliable news that flood online portals, it gives opportunities for citizens to freely criticise the government. Thus, citizenjournalism is seen as intrusive and afflicting the government. In addition, with the level of transparency on political information and news on the rise, the practice of citizen journalism and mainstream media journalism is competing to be faster than the other in the delivery of news, andspeculations surrounding the nation today.

In recent times few issues have been as contentious as the Affordable Healthcare Act. This study analyzed media frames between the New York Times and The Alternet.Org ( N = 1772 ), one mainstream newspaper and one alternative news site, for the year 2012, to examine how two media outlets, different in approach and operational size, reported on the Affordable Healthcare Care Act, to demonstrate that the conflict frame dominated news coverage in both the organizations. Conflict framing emphasizes strife between individuals, and groups, and engenders cynicism which reduces attention to substantive issues. While alternative media is often seen to operate in opposition to mainstream media values, in this case, both mainstream and alterative media chose similar frames of coverage and thus audiences had little recourse to information that could have ensured a better understanding of the policy and its impact.

In several recent cases of actual or attempted regime change, Western governments alleged their opponents' possession of weapons of mass destruction as pretexts for war. Many such allegations are now known to have been false or exaggerated. The Ukraine crisis (since 2013) is arguably of a different order of concern, since it has invoked the participation, in one sense or another, of the United States, the European Union and Russia, each of which possesses abundant nuclear weapons capacity. Can Western consumers of mainstream media news, potentially now more informed of the failures of mainstream media to exercise due caution in the face of their own governments' propaganda, reasonably expect superior future performance? This paper finds little basis for optimism. Drawing from a broader work that monitors mainstream and alternative media, the study identifies 10 key narratives that together forge the battlefield for information warfare between nuclear powers and, with particular respect to mainstream, Western media coverage, the problematic beliefs, assumptions and presumptions that these media invite their audiences to ingest. One of the narratives is considered in detail: the events that took place in Crimea, Odessa and Eastern Ukraine between February and October 2014.

This study analyzes mainstream media (MSM) coverage of fake news discourse and compares it with social networking sites (SNS) users who reference the term "fakenews" in their tweets. The study employs computational methods by analyzing over 8 million tweets and 1,350 news stories using topic modeling. Building on the theory of (networked) gatekeeping and Herman and Chomsky's propaganda model, the results show that SNS users follow networked gatekeeping practices by mostly associating fake news references to the alleged bias of MSM. On the other hand, MSM coverage tends to link fake news to SNS's negative role in spreading misinformation. I argue here that there is a networked flak activity on Twitter which is defined as a collective negative response to MSM in order to discipline it, change its tone and editorial stance, or undermine the public's trust in it.

This article pursues a context-rich understanding of how digital media offer unique opportunities for citizens residing in mainland China to participate in civic engagement and organize their civic values. While the Chinese state authority keeps a heavy hand in any form of media, old or new, for use of overt political expressions, I provide empirical demonstration of the link between entertainment media experiences and the exchange on more serious civic topics. In doing so, I argue for a more expanded notion of civic engagement for political environments such as China and develop an empirical scheme that incorporates ordinary citizens' interactions with more leisure-oriented media texts. Such theoretical and empirical moves, as I point out, can contribute to a more thoughtful discussion of the Internet and civic engagement in China. Furthermore, this article pays particular attention to how the Internet provides a valuable channel for community formation among ordinary Chinese citizens outside the mainstream media, which are mostly occupied by state elites. My examination suggests that the Internet helps online discussants reach further depth in their extension from entertainment discussion to constructing serious discourses on important social issues, more so than the mainstream newspapers.

? 2023 The Royal Society for Public HealthObjectives: Indonesia's measles-rubella (MR) vaccination campaign faced public refusal due to religious objections. The government then lobbied the religious organization to issue a decree to permit the consumption of the MR vaccine, which would enhance public approval. Media outlets, including religious and mainstream media, played a crucial role in promoting the decree and the vaccine. Learning from this MR vaccination campaign in 2018, this study examined how the mainstream and alternative or religious media framed the MR vaccination and how it changed before and after the decree. Study design/methods: A content analysis was performed on 234 news articles from Indonesian religious and mainstream media. Results: Mainstream media positively framed MR vaccines, which were further amplified after the decree was issued. In contrast, religious media consistently depicted the opposing sides of the vaccine and its campaign. Both media types also predominantly cited the government and religious leaders in their articles. Conclusion: While the mainstream media agenda aligns with the national agenda to promote the MR vaccine, religious media still emphasizes the risk of the vaccine. The prevalence of religious leaders in alternative media also suggests that the public, including religious leaders, may not necessarily accept the decree. Hence, more effort should be devoted to encouraging the media and religious leaders to accept the vaccine, as they may act as opinion leaders.

This paper investigates intermedia agenda setting between old and new media platforms through a study of the Norwegian Twitter and mainstream media agendas. The study tracks top tweets and headline news, asking whether Twitter mainly rehashes mainstream media content or actually produces original content. The study finds that Twitter and mainstream media are consistent on the salience of many issues, but also that Twitter gives attention to issues that are overlooked by mainstream media, such as news about environmental challenges and gender equality. The paper also suggests that Twitter contributes to an expansion of the elite, meaning that it has become an important platform for eloquent and media-savvy people outside the traditional political, economic, or academic elites.

This article provides a critical analysis of "#thatPOWER"-a music video featuring will.i.am and Justin Bieber. This analysis focuses on the tensions and binary oppositions depicted in the video that pertain to social and geographic placement (e.g., "race," gender, religion). Social science scholarship on youth and Wendy Brown's account of neoliberalism are drawn on to argue that while "#thatPOWER" emphasizes individual agency and social advancement via will.i.am's own achievements and aspirations, what is unintentionally promoted is an ironic vision of what we call the "Bieber Republic," where agency via participatory democracy is erased. "#thatPOWER" neatly serves neoliberalism by tacitly "teaching" that social problems can be solved by individual achievement and mobility secured by inner energy and grit, backgrounded by market competition, consumerism, and technology. In this way "#thatPOWER" is complicit with what Brown calls the "stealth revolution" of neoliberalism.
